Helen Zille, other role players seek solutions for crime and how to restore trust in the police

Former Western Cape Premier Helen Zille is set to be the opening speaker at the upcoming Hoerikwaggo Indaba on Safety where role players will discuss solutions for crime.

The indaba, hosted by civil society organisation Cape Forum, is named after the Khoisan description of Table Mountain, namely Hoerikwaggo (“mountain in the sea”). Struggle icon Dr Allan Boesak was the guest speaker at the first indaba, held in November last year.

This time the overall theme is “Restoring Trust in the Police” and also what role communities could play in crime prevention.

Zille will speak on the lessons learnt since the release in 2014 of the report of the commission of inquiry on policing in Khayelitsha. Policing experts, including former Provincial Commissioner Adv Lennit Max, will discuss the excessive use of force by the police and respond to recent incidents of police killings of alleged criminals. This topic forms the basis of his recently completed doctoral thesis.

The indaba is taking place on Saturday, 30 November 2024, from 9am to 1pm at the University of Stellenbosch Business School in Carl Cronje Drive in Bellville. The final programme with all speakers and topics will be made available on Thursday, 28 November.
