CAPE FORUM MOURNS THE DEATH OF HISTORIAN PROF. HENRY “JATTI” BREDEKAMP

The coloured community lost one of its most important historians today with the passing of Prof. Henry “Jatti” Bredekamp.

Cape Forum honours him as someone who, through his work at the University of the Western Cape and Iziko museums, ensured that the history of the country’s indigenous people  gained prominence. He was especially an expert on the Khoisan and Griquas, as well as on the Moravian mission station in Genadendal where he was born.

Prof. Jatti’s death should be a wake-up call to coloured communities that his work should be continued by a new generation of researchers and historians in these communities where not everyone always has sufficient knowledge about their heritage.
