Cornal Hendricks, our Boland rugby hero, accomplished the impossible – Cape Forum

The talented Boland rugby star Cornal Hendricks was, according to the civil rights organisation Cape Forum, undeniable proof that the impossible can be achieved despite the extremely difficult circumstances that talented coloured sportspeople must overcome on their path to success. The organisation, which honoured Hendricks with a Cape Champion Award last year, today paid tribute to the former Springbok rugby player who suddenly died last night of a suspected heart attack. In his career, Hendricks played for the Blue Bulls, the Springboks and the Blitzboks, among others.

According to Heindrich Wyngaard, Executive Chairperson of Cape Forum, Hendricks came from a humble background where there was often a lack of both material and emotional support. Still, this brave winger made his way to the top and was chosen to play for the Springboks in 2014 at the age of 26.

Wyngaard emphasises that Hendricks was someone who didn’t let things get him down. Even the shocking news he received in 2015, when doctors advised him to retire form rugby due to a serious heart condition, didn’t deter this talented player. Four seasons later, in 2019, Hendricks was given a second chance to play rugby at the top level again – thanks to then Bulls coach Jake White.

Towards the end of last year, Hendricks was welcomed back to the Boland, where he began his rugby career. The return provided him with the opportunity to serve as a mentor to younger players in his home province. For these reasons and for the inspiration he provided to the children of the Cape communities in particular over so many years, he was honoured with Cape Forum’s Cape Champion Award in 2024.

“Hendricks’ legacy should serve as a reminder to children from the same background as his that anything in life is possible if you are willing to work hard and not let obstacles or challenges steer you off course,” Wyngaard explains.

“His death at such a young age is a huge shock and tragedy. Cape Forum sympathises with the extended Hendricks family and wishes them the strength to cope with their huge loss,” Wyngaard concludes.
