Cape Forum helps create opportunities for players through inaugural Morningstar Junior Rugby 7’s Tournament

In keeping with its commitment to support community development, Cape Forum, acting as one of the sponsors of Morningstar Junior Rugby’s inaugural 7’s tournament, helped to bring junior rugby teams from across Cape Town together for a day of sport, community involvement and new opportunities for young players.

The tournament brought together ten teams, including Goodwood Junior Jaguars, Sakumzi Rugby Organisation, Union Milnerton Rugby Club, Connect NTK Rugby Football Club, Primrose Rugby Football Club, Helderberg Rugby Club, Edusmart Group, Kuilsriver Rugby Juniors and Hamediehs Rugby Football Club.

The tournament was established to give young players more opportunities to play competitive rugby, gain exposure and develop their skills. Such opportunities can be particularly valuable in communities where the costs associated with equipment, transport and regular participation can make access to organised sporting events difficult.

“Bringing communities together is a part of Cape Forum’s focus and we are delighted that we achieved this through our involvement with the Junior 7’s tournament. Not only did it offer kids from different communities the opportunity to play rugby together, but it also brought their parents together who might not otherwise get to spend time together on a social level,” says Heindrich Wyngaard, Chairperson of Cape Forum.

Wingfield Motors, who sponsored the Morningstar Rugby kit through its directors, John van Niekerk and Brent Seyfried, says its sponsorship is part of their commitment to support local clubs that bring people together and invest in the next generation. If you see the team out on the field, you’ll know Wingfield is playing a small part in their journey.

Alderman Theresa Uys, who attended the tournament as the Ward Councillor, has also congratulated all the players, coaches, parents, and organisers for making this event a success. “When young people come together in healthy competition, we strengthen our community, promote positive values, and create opportunities for growth and development.”

The intention for the tournament is to grow into a regular feature on the local sporting calendar and to contribute to the development of Morningstar Junior Rugby as a sustainable platform where young players can access regular playing opportunities. Cape Forum intends to support this tournament in an effort to continue its objective of helping to establish strong autonomous, well-functioning and successful communities in the Cape.

The tournament was made possible through the involvement of several sponsors and community partners. These included Wingfield Motors, Kasselsvlei Spar, Women in Sport Education (WISE), Morningstar Rugby Club NPC, Morningstar Neighbourhood Watch, Smuts & Co Attorneys, Central Defence Force, Pangela Group, Durbanville Tool Hire, AfriForum and Cape Forum.
